Lamptey is certainly used to being tested in training. He has the dubious honor of playing Brighton’s flying winger Kaoru Mitoma every day. “He’s a great player. I’m not going to give him a hint on how to stop him, but he’s really good.”

The now-famous Mitoma wrote a college thesis on dribbling techniques in his native Japan. The pair have yet to discuss details. “I need to give him a little thing and ask him about it.” But Lamptey says he doesn’t take lessons from anyone in a one-on-one situation.

“I definitely back myself up for the pace,” he says. It’s growing every week, so that’s great.”
